If you recently noticed that you are developing some of the first signs of aging, such as fine lines and/or skin laxity, then you may wonder how you can combat them. The good news is that it is that there are many ways to erase these lines and prevent new ones from forming without obtaining invasive cosmetic surgery procedures.
Read on to learn how to combat the first signs of aging and help prevent new ones from occurring.
Amp up Your At-Home Skin Care Regimen
Realize that the right at-home skin care routine cannot only help smooth current fine lines and improve skin laxity, but also help prevent the development of more fine lines increased skin laxity.
A good at-home anti-aging skincare routine doesn't have to be lengthy or complicated. Just follow this basic guideline:
- Choose a non-drying, ph-balanced cleanser. Don't strip all of your skin's natural oils when cleansing. Nothing accentuates the appearance of fine lines more than dry skin.
- Try a glycolic toner. A mild toner that contains glycolic acid will remove the dead skin cells that lie on top of the surface of your skin, and this can help smooth out existing fine lines. In addition, glycolic acid helps increase skin collagen production, which can tighten your skin over time.
- Apply a quality vitamin C antioxidant serum daily. A vitamin C serum will stimulate collagen production in your skin, which can help fill out existing fine lines and firm your skin. With daily use, it will also protect your skin from free radical damage from the sun and environmental pollutants that can contribute to future signs of aging.
- Use a skin-plumping moisturizer. The right moisturizer can plump up fine lines and wrinkles to diminish their appearance temporarily as you wait for your other products to show cumulative effects. Look for one that contains hyaluronic acid.
Try These Treatments Only Your Dermatologist Can Provide
While a good at-home skincare routine can help combat signs of aging over time, dermatologists offer many other treatments that can help erase signs of aging more quickly and/or treat more stubborn signs of aging that do not seem to respond to an at-home skin care routine.
Just a few of these services include:
Dermaplaning
If you want an exfoliating treatment with extra benefits, then consider dermaplaning. During a dermaplaning session, your dermatologist will run a fine razor over your entire face to not only remove dead skin cells that accentuate fine lines, but also removes the fine hair on your face called "vellus hair." When this hair is removed, your makeup will go on more smoothly, which can keep it from pooling in fine lines and drawing attention to them.
Ultherapy
If skin sagging is the sign of aging you are attempting to combat, then ultherapy is a great skin-lifting solution. During an ultherapy session, ultrasound energy is directed toward the "problem areas" of your face to stimulate collagen production deep within your skin. This helps "lift" your skin and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Ultherapy is most commonly performed on the brow (to provide a non-invasive brow lift), on the neck, under the chin, and on décolletage.
There is no downtime after an ultherapy session, and the skin-lifting and firming results from just one ultherapy session can last up to two years.
Peels
Unlike at home exfoliating acids you can use at home, skin peels applied in your dermatologist's office can penetrate skin much more deeply to remove the signs of aging much more quickly.
Milder peels often have no downtime, while deeper ones may require you to "baby" your skin for a few days to a week after the procedure until your new, fresh skin replaces the older skin removed by the peel. However, this downtime is well worth it when the new skin revealed after the peel is much younger in appearance.
